When Should Your App Be a Web App Instead?

A decision guide for founders deciding between a downloadable mobile app and a responsive web experience for their first product.

The best surface is where the job happens

A downloadable app can earn a place on a phone and use device capabilities deeply. A web app can be opened from a link, updated centrally, and work well for desktop or shared workflows. Choose the surface that removes the most friction from the first user’s job, not the one that sounds most impressive in a pitch.

A web app may fit when

  • People discover the product through search, email, or a shared link.
  • Users work mainly at a desk or on larger screens.
  • You need one deployable experience while the workflow is still changing.
  • Installation would be a barrier and deep device features are not central.
  • An internal team or business needs browser access across different devices.

A mobile app may fit when

  • Frequent use, notifications, camera, location, Bluetooth, or offline access are central to the value.
  • The product’s audience already expects a dedicated mobile experience.
  • The interaction benefits from platform conventions and a persistent home-screen presence.

You can sequence the surfaces

Starting on the web does not rule out a later mobile app. Starting with mobile does not mean the web has no role. Define the product’s core data and workflow so future surfaces can serve users without duplicating confusion.
